Hello, my name is Josh, and I have been involved in the wine industry since 2000. I attended the University of South Carolina when I started working at a wine store in Columbia, where I received an enduring education, not only in tasting wine, but learning wine history, and starting to learn the appreciation of wine; something of which I am still doing and aspire to do, every day.
From Columbia, I eventually moved to Florence, South Carolina to open my own gourmet store that not only sold great wine and beer, but to have a cheese counter and cafe, just like the one that I left. Unfortuately within 3 weeks of moving, the economy collapsed and I was left in a town with no money and less direction, so I started to work 2 jobs to save money: I helped run a wine, beer, and liquor store during the day, and was a tableside wine steward at night, while dabbling, and eventually being recognized as a chef. I had come so far, and I wanted more, so I moved out west…
Living in Oregon taught me so much about not only wine, but craft beer as well. Having moved to Keizer, Oregon (arguably the heart of the Willamette Valley), I was able to get my hands dirty as I was fortunate enough to work in the vineyards, not only on the vines, but in the winery, injuring myself countless times, while still helping create an incredible product.
Yada yada yada, I moved back east when my best friend called me and said “Hey, want to help me open a wine store?” The rest is a history that is still being written to this day, and I hope that it continues to write itself for decades and decades…
Oh, if you are wondering who that “best friend” is, read the next bio.
Hi, I’m Jeff and I have been in the wine industry since 2001. Like Josh, I attended the University of South Carolina when I “caught the wine bug.” In one way or another, I have been involved in wine, from ordering and teaching in retail, to organizing giant tastings with superstars like Jean-Bernard Delmas, former winemaker for Chateau Haut-Brion.
I’m both happy and proud of the fact that we came up with the concept of a store that doesn’t make you buy multiple bottles/cases to “reward” you with the best price. You should get it whether you buy cases or a single bottle and we will do our best to make sure that you will always have the best price at The Wine Outlet.
Assistant Manager/Beer Buyer
I have lived in NoVa since the late eighties and would call myself a native. Growing up, my Mother always had a passion for visiting the wineries in the area. Once I turned 21 I jumped right into that passion with her.
In 2009, I got a chance to work at a wine festival with a local Winery and as they say, the rest is history! I began working at the winery immediately and tried to learn as much as I could from the winemaker and other seasoned wine people that worked there. One thing that also developed at the winery is my love for beer. I couldn’t drink wine all the time. Especially, on those hot summer days working in the sun sorting through grapes and bottling wine.
From there I decided to fully immerse myself in both the wine and craft beer industry and I began working with a retailer. One thing that I have realized is that the world of wine and beer is a never ending education about everything from Culture, History, Geography, Topography and Geology. I am never bored. I really enjoy sharing my knowledge of what I know and learning from everyone who shares this passion of wine. Cheers to all of you wine and beer lovers!
